INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 – The Inventory of Tools and Techniques is a place to capture what you are currently aware of, that is, where you are now. The first bucket is for techniques or tools that you use fluently without really having to think about them. The second bucket is for ones you conceptually understand but haven’t practiced. The third is things you actively avoid or work around. Perhaps you haven’t learned them but have a sense that they would be helpful if you did.

Step 2 – Creative Dimensions is a place to think about the baseline skills you need for your creativity. In the image from my sketchbook below I have completed this section with dimensions specific to visual artists. If you’re not sure what they are for your medium, ask a peer or start a conversation on your socials. Rate each section out of 5 to get a sense of where you need to focus.

Step 3 – Actions. What are the things you need to do next with this information?

Step 4 – Research. Every creative practice benefits from research. This points you towards your future development and expansion of skills beyond the gaps you have identified.

That’s it. Print out and stick in your sketchbook and make a note to revisit in 6 months or a year’s time.
